Howdy Dancers
I thought I might take a moment to let you know a little about me and how I got into Square Dancing. My co-worker talked me into trying square dance lessons with the Metro Singles Club in Oklahoma City. I love all kinds of dancing and this was no different. I was instantly on board. After graduation, I had the awesome opportunity to attend the 1989 National Square Dance Convention in Oklahoma City. What a mind blowing experience! I went from dancing with 12 squares to dancing with over 10,000 people from all over the world.
I enjoyed dancing so much that I went right into Plus lessons after Mainstream. At our State dance in 1990, I met Charles Wiggins having no idea that one year later we would be married and I would begin a life as a Military Wife. The following year we moved to Panama City, Panama and the next 4 years increased our family by a son and a daughter so never had enough time to go dancing.
In 1996, we transferred to Watertown, NY and decided to get back into the square dancing community. We found the Kountry Kuzzins Square Dance Club. The draw for us was the fact that the caller brought his baby and toddler to the dances and allowed us to bring our 2 small children to play with his children.
We moved to Killeen in 2000 and attended the Hood Howdy. While there, we saw a square dance demo put on by the Killeen Kickers. At this point, our son was 8 and our daughter was 6. I approached Jerry Lynn, the caller, and asked him how he felt about allowing our children to take lessons. He told us if they paid attention, he would get them through Mainstream. Having been around square dancing since they were small, they took to it easily. They even went on to earn a Square Dance Teen Scholarship when they graduated from High School.
Our family was transferred from Killeen to El Paso in 2007. We all joined the See Saws & Star Dusters Square Dance Club and kept dancing for the next 5 years. When we had an opportunity to make a decision as to where we would move next, we choose to come back to Killeen. Jerry Lynn said we were the only family that had moved away and then returned to the club. We have been Kickers ever since.
I took over the Line Dance prompting for our club 5 years ago and a few years ago attended a Round Dance College to learn how to cue. I have held the office of Vice-President of the Kickers and now have the opportunity to take on the role of leadership as the President. I’m looking forward to a great year.
See you in a Square.
